Si em preguntessin quines són les condicions per a arribar a ser artista, contestaria… les que cal evitar.
Cal evitar néixer en un poble de Badajoz i emigrar on Barcelona perd el nom. Evitar entendre l’art com un estat i no com un ofici. Evitar
investigar centrant-se en un estil reconeixible. Evitar els dubtes adoptant posicions inamovibles. Defugir l’ambició intel·lectual d’entendre l’art com a vida. I sobretot, evitar la humilitat que torna als artistes en éssers vulgars.
Veient la meva biografia diria: «i tu per què no ho has evitat?» A la qual cosa contestaria: «perquè —i faria una pausa— és el meu caràcter».

If someone asked me which are the conditions to become an artist, I would answer… what should be avoided.
We must avoid being born in a small town of Badajoz and migrating to the area where Barcelona loses its name. Avoid understanding art as a state and not as a profession. Avoid investigating by focusing on a recognizable style. Avoid doubts by adopting immovable positions. Avoid the intellectual desire to understand art as life. Above all, avoid the humbleness that turns artists into vulgar beings. Looking at my biography, I would ask: «why didn’t you avoid it?» To which I would answer: «because —pause— it is my character».

Si me preguntasen cuáles son las condiciones para llegar a ser artista, contestaría… las que hay que evitar.
Hay que evitar nacer en un pueblo de Badajoz y emigrar a donde Barcelona pierde el nombre. Evitar entender el arte como un estado y no como un oficio. Evitar investigar centrándose en un estilo reconocible. Evitar las dudas adoptando posiciones inamovibles. Soslayar la ambición intelectual de entender el arte como vida. Y sobre todo, evitar la humildad que torna a los artistas en seres vulgares. Viendo mi biografía diría: «¿y tú por qué no lo has evitado?» A lo que contestaría: «porque —y haría una pausa— es mi carácter».
